Advanced Portfolio Planning

Starting to plan my short-film package has been relatively easy as I have gained experience from my Foundation Portfolio. Last year, having created an opening scene to a drama I decided to continue working on this genre and identifying the various themes it explores.

Knowing that these films tend to portray realistic images of characters - which can be found in conflict with either themselves, others or forces of nature - I plan on developing a character-driven narrative. With my understanding of this genre, as well as its conventions, I want to be able to convey expectations and attract a specific group of media consumers; those who are interested in my chosen genre.

Moreover, I expect my short film to be produced by an independent company. I believe this will allow for the tone of my narrative to be further conveyed and highlight the themes that are important to me.

Within the drama genre itself, there are clichés that an audience relies on and looks forward to. These can be seen in the feature films produced by the independent entertainment company A24. From films such as 'Lady Bird', 'Moonlight', 'Mid90s', 'Waves' and many more, a unique sense of originality is created.

I find myself being inspired by many of their independent movies as they provide us with protagonists dealing with the struggles of everyday life. For example, a film like "Moonlight" can be seen as a drama covering this theme due to the way it portrays the protagonist's search for identity and the exploration of multiple stages of life (childhood, adolescence and adulthood). From watching this film, I found motivation in creating something similar and learning more about the tone used in conveying these narratives as I continue creating my short-film.
