Codes and Conventions of Short Films

With previous research on codes and conventions, I understood that codes are media language choices, while conventions are the ways the codes are used. Therefore, the study of codes and conventions as symbols - also known as semiotics - communicates meaning to its audience, by making them explore the relationship between the signifier (denotation) and the signified (connotation).

It is important for me to incorporate this concept into my short film as the knowledge of codes and conventions invites prediction, sets up expectations and allows ways of navigating complex texts.

When it comes to short films, it is well known that they refer to any film not considered a feature film in terms of length. These media texts commonly have a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits. However, films of this type will also share codes and conventions which separate them from other forms of video.

The length of short films requires simplicity in the storyline; easy to follow with limited dialogue and characters introduced. Although the five-act structure is a classic template used to create narrative arcs and pacing for films, in short films each section is usually condensed to connect the audience to the story and its few well-developed characters. Additionally, it is possible to break this convention by some stages being sometimes dismissed and not incorporated.

Therefore, it is very likely for short films to depict more creativity and abstraction. As these texts face less pressure to be profitable for large audiences, they will often delve into alternative themes and narratives made up of a number of creative shots with an up-and-coming cast. To add, the directors and film makers are able to place their own signature looks, which attracts many successful people in the media - including Christopher Nolan, Spike Jonze and Tim Burton.

Due to the lack of awareness of short films and the limited access in mainstream forms, they will often vary in genre and try to appeal to a niche audience. Commonly, these films will convey strong emotions to the viewer and leave them to think about depicted themes after the film has finished - as there is no time to make up their minds on particular topics while watching. Additionally, there will be a stronger connection to the characters as their truest form is shown closely throughout, with no time wasted.

Overall, it is important for my short film to rely on obvious conventions - while, at the same time, incorporating my own initiatives in the theme conveyed. This is important to satisfy an audience with set expectations in regards to short films and entertain others through storytelling.
