Exploring Production and Distribution
After carefully researching into the process of creating a film during my Foundation portfolio, I learned about the four main stages of production for a film to reach an audience. These include the product's development, it's pre-production, production and then post-production.
For my previous project film 'EMMA', I looked into the significant steps involved in the four stages of producing a film. With the knowledge that I acquired, I am able to successfully work on the pre-production stages of my short film and have confidence in later starting to work on the post-production process.
For the post-production of my short film, I will start to go through the editing process. During this stage, I expect to be selecting appropriate footage, editing sounds, creating a production company and adding credits to my media product. Once all of this is done to a satisfactory level, the project will be officially completed and ready to be distributed.
The final stage of the production process consists of making a movie available to the public. It is important to understand that the producers' job is to strike a lucrative distribution deal with theatres and other distributing platforms like Netflix and HBO - since they will create the marketing portfolio for the film's target audience.
I decided that my production company will be independent - which will both produce and distribute films, while still using streaming and rental platforms for extra promotional help. I find this specifically suitable because of the product that I am creating; since it is a short film, I believe that streaming services and their growing collection of such media, will allow for my product to be accessed by a significant number of people. To add, having an independent company which both produces and distributes media products will not only allow for a full level of ownership, but also for all of the profits to be secured by the company.
