Changes and Reflections

During the production of my Advanced Portfolio, the process of research, planning and production required long and repetitive engagement. Therefore, I was able to continue developing production skills over the course of creating my short film. However, there are several aspects of my Portfolio that I would like to reflect on.

Firstly, I believe I could have depicted Luna's character in a more engaging and captivating way - through better planning of mise-en-scène and directing. With future opportunities, I would like to improve the set of particular scenes to generate a specific type of mood - which, in turn, will be easier to recognise. To add, I would like to direct the actors in a more skilful way to achieve a particular effect.

Secondly, I believe I could have used the skillset that I gained through my preliminary exercise better. Using the knowledge I gained from practicing three-point-lighting, I could have used the different ways of conveying a subject and working with shadows to my advantage. Instead of this, I relied on natural lighting and a blue LED light in hopes of enhancing the realism of the short film.

Additionally, it might have been better to use more unconventional marketing techniques for my social media page. By choosing Instagram, I had the opportunity to come up with unique ways of attracting my target audience and engaging with it - specifically, by taking inspiration from A24 and the public social media accounts made for the company's films. However, I focused on more conventional and 'safe' ways in order to have certainty in the ability to build followers and generate excitement around ‘Nostalgia’.

Overall, the desire to produce an engaging and entertaining short film package, as well as the experience I went through during my Foundation Portfolio, helped me gain the skills I required to thrive throughout the production process. And now, I am able to learn from my experience and create more captivating media texts.
