Creating a Postcard Advertisement
After researching various postcard advertisements and posters of films, I started working on my own advertisement for 'Nostalgia' - which holds the purpose of being presented at a short film festival.
First, I began creating a film poster on Canva. I believed that having a poster for my short film would make the process of developing a postcard advertisement easier - as it would act as a guide and provide inspiration when needed.
In the poster, I used a picture I took of my sister, who plays Luna, and included all of the details that would later be used in my postcard - such as, a clear display of the streaming platform where the short film is available and a review of the film from IndieWire (a film industry and review website that focuses predominantly on independent films.)
The text details seen on the poster had been created using Canva and its free to use fonts. I did not spend a long time deciding which fonts to use as I grew comfortable with the graphic design platform when creating my Foundation Portfolio; I already had several favourite fonts that I believed would work well with the overall tone I tried to achieve. The reason I chose the font that is seen on my poster is because it created a refined look, while remaining contemporary and playful - conveying the image of the production company.
Moreover, the details of the HBO logo had been inspired by Netflix, specifically the poster of 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things' - which I found on Pinterest and thought re-creating something similar would work well with my own poster. Therefore, I worked on enhancing the HBO logo and then proceeded to add it onto Canva - where I later worked on adding the 'available for streaming' text and a vertical white line.

Due to the fact that postcard advertisements have different dimensions than posters, I had to adjust all the texts and images used. This took more time than expected as I wanted for the finished product to look satisfactory and authentic. Therefore, I continued to work on it for quite some time; adding new details and changing the layout of the text.
In my final product, I changed the position of the review from IndieWire and added 5 stars above the text to replicate what an actual review could look like on film posters and postcards. Additionally, I had to work on the backside of my postcard advertisement. This side was important to display additional information, such as the film festivals where 'Nostalgia' will be presented and its screening times, contact details and the production company's website. This was specifically decided to provide festival attendees the information that will help build an audience for my short film and promote networking.
To add, the background colour of the backside of my postcard advertisement was selected to create a clear visual correlation between the two sides. This match in colour created a more polished look and the overall use of film festival logos - with the 2023 date - allowed for the final product to display details that added to the credibility of the postcard advertisement.
